Endorsement for Under the Wing Sleep Consultancy by Mary The Baby Whisperer

Updated: Apr 19

Mary is an Irish Midwife with extensive experience who offers support and guidance to parents on all things pregnancy and baby. She wrote an article about me on her website endorsing me and what I do.

Here it is:

Generally speaking, sleep deprivation is accepted as part of the course in the early weeks and months of having a baby. On the other hand, sleep regression refers to periods where an infant who was previously sleeping well, suddenly begins to have difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep or both.

If and when it happens, a sleep regression is distressing. Just when you thought you were getting a handle on this parenting lark – everything seems to be going backwards!

I have the enormous pleasure of introducing the lovely Hannah Quirke – founder of @underthewingsleepconsultancy – a lady on a mission to help parents struggling to get much needed sleep, so that their lives carry on with some semblance of normality.

Her desire to combat your child’s sleeping difficulties comes from very real personal experience – let’s read on and find out more.

Background

Hannah is the proud Mum of 3 young children – Tom, Tilly and Ted, aged 5, 3, and 1 respectively.

(Don’t you just LOVE the alliteration name theme?)

This lady just loves children – she’s been interacting and working with them from her early teenage years in various roles, including babysitting and swim coaching.

A burning desire to make a difference in children’s lives is evident in her career choice too. As a primary school teacher, Hannah knows the value of instilling a love of learning and education from an early age. She has the true heart of a teacher, with a fervent wish to help children reach their full potential.

When the time came to have her own babies – Hannah thought (like many of us!), that she’d breeze through the whole thing – a piece of cake, what could possibly go wrong?

Life happens, and in the words of Robert Burns “The best laid plans of mice and men, often go awry”.

Hannah ended up having a difficult pregnancy, wheelchair bound at times, with periods of prolonged bedrest thrown in. You guessed it – birth was an emergency C-section.

The first weeks after delivery were difficult to say the least – Tom was very unsettled and Hannah instinctively knew that something wasn’t quite right with her baby. She consulted the professionals – her GP, Public Health Nurse and Pharmacist – they couldn’t find anything particularly wrong.

Talking with family and friends wasn’t much help either. In fact, poor Hannah was left feeling inadequate as a mother and was starting to wonder if she was cut out for this motherhood journey! She remembers people looking at her with pity, almost laughingly reminding her that it’s normal for babies to be up all night and vomiting after every feed! (It isn’t!)

She ploughed on and then, when Tom was just 5 weeks old – she literally got the fright of her life!

Tom was suffering from reflux, his condition was so problematic that he aspirated and stopped breathing. Following an emergency ambulance dash and hospital admission, the diagnosis was finally made.

Hannah’s inherent maternal instincts were right from the start – her son had a very real medical condition necessitating a strict feeding schedule, that makes me feel exhausted just reading about it!

Tom needed to be fed every 90 minutes – both day and night. While exclusively breastfeeding, it took 30 minutes for him to feed and after that time, Hannah had to keep him upright for 20 minutes, in order to prevent any repeat regurgitation/aspiration episode. Poor Hannah was lucky to snatch a 40 minute interval before starting the whole process over again – 24 hours a day – 7 days a week!!!

While deserving of wholehearted applause for her heroic efforts – we can all imagine how drained and depleted this poor lady must have felt.

While exploring the background for this article, I was struck not only by Hannah’s determination to do her very best for her little man, but in addition, her total lack of self-pity. She felt exhausted, severely sleep-deprived and at times, a former shell of her former self. However, Tom was thriving and that was Hannah’s priority.

Fast forward 2 years, the reflux was gone but, this lady now had a toddler who didn’t sleep.

Hannah soldiered on, trying out different sleep training methods to no avail.

In desperation, she finally sought the services of a sleep consultant who gave her a gentle, supportive sleep training schedule. Within a month, Hannah had a little boy who slept through the night.

It was a life-changing experience for this stoic but, utterly exhausted first-time mother. Just WHY hadn’t she done this earlier?

Hannah began to enjoy motherhood, she became the mother that she imagined she would be before Tom was born. She felt like herself again – albeit a new and much wiser version.

In typical Irish Mammy fashion (who’s praises have been heralded on here repeatedly!) – Hannah decided to train as a sleep consultant so that she could help others.

Her vision is that sleep consultancy becomes more mainstream in Ireland – a valuable service that can make such a real difference.

Here’s what she has to say:

“Looking after your little ones sleep is not only looking after their wellbeing – you’re also looking after the mother’s health and the collective wellbeing of the family unit.”

Let’s check out www.underthewingsleepconsultancy.ie while I count down my top reasons for endorsing this AMAZING service.

10 Reasons why I LOVE Under the Wing Sleep Consultancy

  • Hannah’s Bravery & Courage  The number ONE reason for this endorsement. “Mom Guilt” is a very real phenomenon. It’s a feeling of guilt that many mothers experience regarding their parenting choices, along with perceived inadequacies in their ability to look after their children. I have to say that we’re particularly good at judging others here in the Emerald Isle. Personally I’ve had to defend clients who’ve chosen to engage a maternity nurse – such ladies are perceived as having “notions” or too self-absorbed to solely look after their newborn. Hannah wants to change that way of thinking – seeking help is not a sign of weakness, it’s quite the reverse. Getting adequate sleep benefits EVERYBODY – It’s okay to seek support and if necessary for mothers to take some time for themselves.

  • Website Design – logging onto underthewingsleepconsultancy.ie instills an immediate sense of calm, akin to taking 3 very deep breaths in the midst of chaos. From the cute birdie logo to the soft, serene colour palette that features throughout the site, you’re suddenly immersed in a more tranquil space. Why not click on the link and see what I mean?

In addition to a tailored offering geared towards your personal circumstances, @underthewingsleepconsultancy takes the time to teach parents about the science of sleep in an approach that’s both supportive and informative. Essentially, parents are given a skill-set so that they can navigate any future regressions or challenges, if and when they arise.
