Why Your Baby Wakes Early - and Gentle Ways to Help Them Sleep Later

As a mum, I used to think early mornings were just part of having a baby - that some little ones just wake at 5 a.m. and there’s nothing you can do about it. But over time, I learned that early wakings often have gentle solutions.

If your baby or toddler wakes early every morning, it might not be “just how they are.” Often, it’s their body clock, nap balance, or bedtime routine sending mixed signals. With a few calm adjustments, your little one can start sleeping later - and you can start the day feeling rested.

1. Check Bedtime Timing

If bedtime drifts too late, your baby may become overtired, making it harder for them to link sleep cycles in the early hours. Try bringing bedtime forward by 15–20 minutes for three nights. A consistent, slightly earlier bedtime can often reduce those 5–6 a.m. starts.

Similarly, a bedtime that is too early will cause an early wake. Some babies just need less sleep overnight and wake up rested earlier. If this is your baby then you will need to push bedtime out in order to shift their total night sleep.

Tip: Keep the last 30 minutes before bed calm and predictable - same lights, same lullaby, same order. Little ones love consistency.

2. Review Nap Timing and Wake Windows

Sometimes a baby who wakes early has nap timing that doesn’t match their age or total sleep needs. If naps are short or are too long, their sleep pressure can drop before morning.

Check that wake windows (the time between sleeps) and their total 24 hour sleep to see that it

suit your child’s age. Small tweaks - even 15 minutes - can make mornings smoother.

3. Protect the Sleep Environment

If dawn light filters in too early, your baby’s body clock can switch into “morning mode.” Use blackout blinds or darker curtains, and keep the room dim until your chosen wake-up time.

Avoid starting the day too early - stay in a calm, dark space for a few minutes before getting up. Over time, your baby learns that it’s still “sleep time.”

4. Focus on a Calm Bedtime Routine

A soothing, predictable routine helps your baby’s body prepare for longer sleep. Lower lights, quiet play, gentle music, and slow movements signal that bedtime is approaching.

Avoid bright screens or overstimulating play before bed - this can make it harder for babies to settle into a deep sleep and stay asleep.

5. Track Sleep Patterns for a Week

Keep a short log of bedtime, wake-ups, nap lengths, and early rising times. Patterns often appear quickly - for example, earlier bedtimes leading to longer mornings.

Once you notice a trend, change one variable at a time (bedtime, nap timing, or environment) and watch what happens over the next few days.

Gentle Sleep Support That Works

Parenting is full of early mornings and unexpected challenges, but most early waking isn’t permanent. With gentle, consistent tweaks to your baby’s sleep schedule, you can often shift those wake-ups later - without resorting to harsh methods.
