Breastfeeding and Sleep Training: can you do both?

Updated: Apr 19

Breastfeeding and sleep training - two topics that often spark heated debates in the parenting world. Many mums worry that sleep training will interfere with their breastfeeding journey. But the truth is, you can do both!

The key is finding a balance that works for you and your baby. Here are some tips to help you achieve better sleep while continuing to breastfeed:

  • Prioritise Daytime Feeding: Ensure your baby is well-fed during the day to minimise night wakings due to hunger.

  • Split Feeds at Bedtime: Consider feeding your baby before and after their bedtime routine. This can help them take in plenty of milk before their long night sleep.

  • Night Time Feedings: If your baby wakes up during the night, it's perfectly fine to feed them. However, try to distinguish between hunger-related wakings and comfort-seeking. It is absolutely okay to breastfeed your baby to sleep until it stops working for you. Breastmilk contains melatonin at night time which, of course, helps your baby sleep.

With a little understanding, you can achieve better sleep for both you and your baby while maintaining a successful breastfeeding relationship.
